Today (5/11/21) we spoke with the USCG regarding the submerged objects on the north channel of the Kent Narrows. On May 4th, the Army Corp of Engineers surveyed the channel and at that time they were unable to find any submerged objects. They did find a shoal (details below) and temporary aids to navigation will be placed later this week to navigate boaters around the shoal. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have further questions. (410) 745-3000

How does wind impact the Chesapeake Bay?

4/19/2021

Picture
  • Wind has a physical, social and economic impact on the Chesapeake Bay. Facts below
  • Wind is needed to mix the freshwater that comes from the watershed’s rivers and streams with the saltwater from the ocean.
  • These bodies of water all meet in the Bay (a defining characteristic of an estuary) but the tide alone cannot get the job done, it needs help from the wind.
  • As it circulates the water, wind also stirs up the oxygen-rich surface waters with the lower depths to support marine life.
  • When there is less wind, it reinforces stratification to divide the water into layers and stop oxygen from mixing, which is bad for critters at the bottom like oysters and worms.
  • The circulation that occurs when freshwater and saltwater mix also disperses nutrients throughout the water.
  • It blows in blue crab larvae from the saltwater back into the Bay and pushes food toward rockfish larvae.
  • Low-winds can be a contributing factor to hypoxia, which is when there is a depletion of oxygen in the water, which forms dead zones that threaten marine life.

32 Year Anniversary

1/11/2021

Picture
32 years of assisting boaters on the Chesapeake Bay. Hard work, integrity and communication, mixed with a bit of brackish water has been our key to success.

Here’s a few fun facts:
-We are a woman owned business.
-Locally owned and operated on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, we are a family operation fortunate enough to work with some of the best captain’s on the Bay. (Shout out to Capt. Trevor for over 14 years as Head Captain)
-When we opened in 1989, our boats were green. We became affiliated with BoatUS in 1991 and have had red boats ever since.
-Boating and water safety are paramount to our business.

We would like to extend a special thank you to all of the local businesses with whom we have great working relationships, the boaters who have entrusted us to get them home safely, and last but not least, the entire Tow Jamm crew whose dedication and grit has made this all possible. Here’s to the next 32 years!

SMALL, LOCAL BUSINESS- OUR HISTORY

11/30/2020

Tow Jamm Marine started in 1989 with 2 people, Mary & Bill Gilmer and 1 green towboat. At the time, there was not a big presence of marine assistance towing & salvage on the Chesapeake like there is today. We began 24/7 assistance for boaters and the rest has been history. In 1991 we signed a contract with BoatUS to become affiliated with the nations largest on-water towing fleet. We continued to grow our fleet and our captains with the mission to provide safe, reliable and quality service to boaters in need. We owe our success to our customers, local marine businesses (marinas, boat yards, mechanics), word of mouth and more (too many of you to list!). Because of your support over the years, you’ve helped a small business grow, add employees, support families and the local marine economy and beyond. For this, we thank you and you have our word that we will always be ready, 24/7, to come to your assistance.  (Mary & Bill’s grandchildren are now growing up as 3rd generation towboaters!) The boating world is small and when you support local businesses, it has a positive effect throughout the community. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! We look forward to serving you for decades to come. To the other small businesses, we support you and  commend you for your dedication.

Top 10 Anchorages on Maryland's Eastern Shore- 2020 Edition

9/4/2020

Few people know the Chesapeake Bay and it’s waterways as well as Tow Jamm’s very own Fleet Captain, Trevor Hammon. Trevor is a local captain, waterman and waterfowl hunting guide. His knowledge of the Eastern Shore and it’s tributaries are second to none. Capt. Trevor has handpicked some of his favorite anchorages and we are sharing them so that you can enjoy fall boating to the fullest.

From North to South:

  1. Queenstown Creek- Located just north of the Kent Narrows, this getaway offers a secluded anchorage and a great beach and sandbar for the kids and family. Be sure to stay in the middle of the channel when entering the Creek.
  2. Lloyds Creek- just past Shaw Bay on the Wye River is a perfect place to drop the hook and enjoy the wildlife. If you haven’t explored the Wye River, it’s one of our favorites on the Bay!
  3. Leeds Creek- just off of the Miles River and across from St. Michaels Harbor, Leeds Creek offers a safe anchorage, wildlife and a short ride into St. Michaels for restaurants, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Marinas and great local shops. If you haven’t visited St. Michaels, it's a must!
  4. Grace Creek- located off of Broad Creek, near Bozman. Grace Creek is a picturesque anchorage and great place to watch local crabbers bringing in their catch to P.T. Hambelton’s Seafood. Get lucky and you might even be able to buy some fresh crabs off the boat!
  5. Dun Cove- off of Harris Creek, near Tilghman Island. Dun Cove is a beautiful deepwater anchorage and a short dinghy ride away from the waterfront restaurants and marinas on Tilghmans Knapps Narrows.
  6. Tripps Creek- behind Deep Water Point off of the Tred Avon River. Past the town of Oxford, this is a stunning setting and quiet place to enjoy a night on the hook. Open a book, sit back and relax!
  7. The Strand- just off the Town of Oxford is a mooring field and anchorage. Enjoy watching the Bellevue Car Ferry bring its passengers across the River and be sure to visit historic Oxford with its beaches, restaurants, marinas and great streets for walking and exploring the local maritime culture.
  8. La Trappe Creek- located just off of the Choptank River, La Trappe Creek at Martin’s Hollow will be on your portside as you enter, there is a beautiful beach and sand bar to your port going into the creek. There is deep water close to the beach. If you’re looking to visit a port for the day, you can cruise up to Cambridge to visit the historic town, eat at the delicious restaurants and get any supplies or parts you need.
  9. British Harbor- up the Choptank River, one mile north of Chancellors Point- this is a deepwater anchorage. When anchored at British Harbor, boaters can dinghy over to Suicide Bridge Restaurant for great food, they also have slips available. Check to see their schedule for their Mississippi style paddle wheel boat for its rides and dinner cruises!
  10. Hudson Creek- off of the Little Choptank River. Looking for a secluded, peaceful anchorage to truly escape? Hudson Creek will be on your port side as you enter the Little Choptank, anchor inside the mouth of the creek and enjoy the view!

*Before anchoring, please check the weather  forecast, the tides and local charts of the area to familiarize yourself. Be sure you set your anchor with the appropriate scope ratio and turn on your anchor light if you are staying overnight. You are responsible for your boat and the safety of you and your guests aboard. For more information or questions, please contact us at info@towjamm.com or 410-745-3000. Happy Boating!
