When you’re on the water, emergencies happen quickly and it is important to know how to call for help. In these scenarios, the ability to request help quickly can be the difference between life and death.
This blog post details 2 easy ways for you to find and relay your location when you need help on the water.
1. Download the Free BoatUS App
Google Play → Open Google Play Store App → Search for “BoatUS” → Tap “Install” → Open App.
App Store → Open the Apple App Store → Search for “BoatUS” → select “Boatus.com/app” → tap “Get” → click “Install”.
Open App→ Click “Info” on bottom right. Your Current Location will be presented in Latitude & Longitude. Click “Enable Location Services” if you do not see your location displayed.
You can click “Share Location” and send a text or email, or simply tell the dispatcher over the phone what your Lat & Long coordinates are.
If you have clicked “Request a Tow”, your coordinates will automatically be entered to the BoatUS dispatchers.
2. Use Text Message to Send Location
Droid Users→ Open Android Message App → Click the small blue plus sign (+) to the left of Message Bar → Choose the last icon on the list “Upside down tear-drop with dot in the middle” → Pop Up screen will appear → Click “Allow Messages to Access this devices Location” → Tap “Select this location” to add it to this message→ send the message to: email@example.com or the phone number of dispatcher or captain that was given to you.
Apple Users → Open Messages App → tap on conversation icon→ add recipient: firstname.lastname@example.org or phone number of dispatch or captain that was given to you → tap on the information button on the upper right hand corner (sometimes you need to press on the recipient's name and the little arrow to open this box up) → Tap “Send My Current Location”
